Nigeria are through to the AFCON 2025 knockout after a thrilling 3-2 win over Tunisia in Group C in Fez.
The Super Eagles who led 3-0 at one stage thanks to goals from Victor Osmihen, Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman, had to survive a dramatic late surge from Tunisia to secure their second win from as many games.
Goals from Montassar Talbi and Ali Abdi gave the Carthage Eagles renewed hope, but Nigeria held on for a needed win.
Osimhen, now at Galatasaray, headed home from point-blank range off Lookman’s cross for the opener before halftime.
Nigeria continued from where they had stopped from, needing just four minutes after the restart to double their advantage. Ndidi heading in from Lookman corner.
Lookman got the third in the 66th minute, firing in a left-footed strike, in off the post, after a good cut-back by Osimhen.
In the 75th minute, Talbi reduced the deficit with a precise header from Hannibal Mejbri’s well-delivered free-kick.
Tunisia got their second in the 87th minute when VAR ruled that Bright Osayi-Samuel had handled the ball inside the area for Ali Abdi to smash in the penalty into the roof of the net to set up a nervy finish.
Tunisia came agonizingly close to completing the comeback in stoppage time, but captain Ferjani Sassi’s header drifted inches wide.
Nigeria ultimately held firm to register a second successive win, moving to six points and top of Group C. They face Uganda in the final match in Fez next Tuesday while Tunisia, who are on three points, travel to Rabat to face Tanzania.
