South Africa seeks to seal a place in the AFCON 2025 round of 16 when they take on Zimbabwe in their final group match on Monday at the Grand Stade de Marrakech.
Bafana Bafana currently sit second in Group B with three points – They beat Angola 2-1 in their opener before falling 1-0 to Egypt in their second match.
The side will need at least a point to seal second place, which is just enough to qualify out of the group.
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos stated ahead of the match: “In our last match, we knew we could not afford to lose, and it is exactly the same situation. If we do not lose this match, we will be qualified for the next round, and that is what matters most for us.”
“We know the opponent will be very difficult. This is not the first time we have faced Zimbabwe. In my four years with the team, we have often been drawn together, whether in AFCON or World Cup qualifiers.
“They are always very motivated when they play against us. It will therefore be a tough match, and we will need to be at our best to get a good result.”
This is a regional derby given South Africa is bordered by Zimbabwe in the North.
Zimbabwe and South Africa have met 11 times in all competitions – South Africa hold a slight advantage with five victories, while Zimbabwe have recorded two wins, with four matches ending in draws.
Bafana Bafana who reached the semifinals in the 2023 edition in Ivory Coast, will fancy their chances against Zimbabwe given the quality in their roster including attackers Oswin Appollis and Lyle Foster
