Guinea Denies Plans to Challenge 1976 AFCON Result

The Guinean Football Federation (FGF) has dismissed reports claiming it plans to challenge the outcome of a match from the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations, clarifying that no such action has been initiated.

In a statement released to the public, the federation said it has not filed any case with the Court of Arbitration for Sport or the Confederation of African Football regarding the historic competition.

The clarification follows widespread reports, particularly on social media, suggesting Guinea was considering contesting the result of its match against Morocco during the 1976 tournament.

The FGF described the claims as inaccurate and without any official basis.

Providing context, the federation recalled that the match in question was played on March 14, 1976, in Addis Ababa. Guinea took the lead in the 33rd minute through Chérif Souleymane before Morocco equalized late in the game via Ahmed Makrouh, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

The FGF also highlighted the unique format of the tournament at the time, noting that the competition did not feature a traditional final. Instead, the winner was decided through a final group stage mini-league. Morocco topped that group and were crowned champions, while Guinea finished second.

This comes in the wake of CAF’s decision to award Morocco the 2025 AFCON title, overturning Senegal’s 1-0 win and recording it as a 3-0 forfeiture, following a petition by Morocco regarding a 14-minute walk-off protest by Senegal in the final.
