Hoima City Stadium to host first competitive match

The newly built Hoima City Stadium will host its first ever competitive match on Friday when Kitara FC take on Buhimba United Saints in a Uganda Premier League encounter scheduled for 4pm.

The historic fixture follows approval from the Uganda Premier League Secretariat after the hosts requested a change of venue for the Matchday 21 clash. The game will now be played at the new Hoima City Stadium instead of The Royals Park – Butema.

According to the league Secretariat, the host club confirmed that all the necessary hosting and operational requirements have been met, allowing the match to proceed at the new facility as scheduled.

The Hoima City Stadium, constructed by Turkish firm MS Summa, was officially opened in December last year by Yoweri Museveni.

Located in Mparo Division in western Uganda, the multi-purpose stadium was delivered in record time. Construction began in September last year and was completed in just 12 months, finishing four months ahead of schedule — a rare achievement for a project of this magnitude.

The stadium is one of two venues Uganda has designated for the 2027 AFCON, alongside Mandela National Stadium.

Built at a cost of 129 million US dollars, approximately 500 billion Ugandan shillings, the Hoima project represents a major investment not only in football but also in the country’s broader sports infrastructure.

Beyond the main football arena, the complex includes a 2,000-seater mini indoor arena, a semi-Olympic swimming pool measuring 25 by 12.5 metres, additional stadium and outdoor football pitches, running tracks, and outdoor courts for basketball and volleyball.

The entire facility sits on a 16.8-acre site designed to host elite competitions while also serving the wider community.
