Match Officials Suspended Pending Probe Into UPL Controversies

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has suspended several match officials following controversial decisions in two recent Uganda Premier League matches.

The incidents occurred during the match between SC Villa and Express FC on 7 March 2026, and the game between Buhimba United Saints FC and Police FC played on 17 February 2026.

Assistant referee Immaculate Ongiera was sanctioned after disallowing a SC Villa goal for offside during the encounter against Express at Wankulukuku Stadium.

The decision proved costly for Villa, as Express went on to rescue a point in a match that ended goalless.

In the separate incident involving Buhimba United Saints and Police FC, which ended in a one-all draw, the entire refereeing team has been faulted for allowing Buhimba substitute Eric Nyonyintono to enter the field of play wearing a different jersey.

Nyonyintono later had a decisive impact on the match, coming off the bench to score the equaliser after Police had taken the lead through Reagan Male.

The officials implicated in the incident include referee Musisi Henry, assistant referees Mbabali Samuel and Kinyera Fred, fourth official Semakula John, match assessor Hillary Kimbugwe and general coordinator Kugonza Christopher.

FUFA said its Referees Standing Committee reviewed the incidents and subsequently referred the officials to the Referees Disciplinary Panel.

All the officials have been suspended from future match appointments pending the outcome of the disciplinary hearing.

However, no sanctions have been taken against assistant referee Julius Mukasa, who failed to notify referee Shamirah Nabadda about an offside in Saidi Mayanja’s goal during KCCA’s 2-1 victory on Friday.

Mayanja was clearly in an offside position when he headed in a cross from Ivan Ahimbisibwe in the match.
