Uganda Cranes: Paul Put rues missed chances

Uganda Cranes coach Paul Put says his team deserved more after a 1-1 draw with Tanzania in their AFCON Group C encounter with Tanzania ON Saturday.

The Cranes had a chance to win it late but Allan Okello sent his penalty over the bar in added time.

Uche Ikpeazu Mubiru had leveled matters off the bench after Simon Msuva’s opener for the Taifa Stars.

“I think we didn’t deserve a draw. I think we had more opportunities. If you look at the ball possession, we had more of it,” said Put after the game.

“We also missed a penalty which is very painful but that is a part of football. We have a very young team so my responsibility is also to build a team for 2027 because we are the host country.”

After two matches, Uganda sit bottom of the group with just a point to show and face Nigeria on Tuesday in their last group game.

The top two teams of each group, along with the best four third-placed teams, advance to the round of 16.

Put added: “I spoke to the players and informed that they we need to keep the belief. You have to play until the last game. Yes we are disappointed, but we need to reset the mindset and prepare for the match against Nigeria which we know will not be easy.”

Nigeria are through to the knockout having beaten Tunisia 3-2.
